Well, what do yah know? A killer French grind band. There were Homesick - Morgue - The Process To Define The Shape Of Self Loathing bands brought to mind immediately when listening to this album - Nasum and Strapping Young Lad.
Nasum because of the production. To make it short, the production is massive. Like Shift the drums are pushed to the edge of the perceivable sound spectrum instead of being coupled up in the middle.
The result is an absolutely huge, noisy sound, with the snare cutting straight through the bass and guitars. The mix itself is all guitars, snare and vocals. Morgue have ended up with a very dirty, raw and powerful sound. The reason I brought Strapping Young Lad to mind were the vocals. The vocalist has a very aggressive yet very audible mid-range. He sounds like a mix between the late, great Mizeko and Devin Townsend's more aggressive mid-ranges see: "Skesis". They've but a bit of a distortion on the recording the make the vocals extremely violent and confronting.
There isn't a great deal of motivation, but somehow that doesn't matter; Morgue manages to pull it off. The music itself is progressive grindcore. The riffs are killer, the vocals are complementary and the drums are constant - more there to relentless batter you with kick drum and snare and round out the wall of noise than as a focal point of the music. The bass guitar is a tiny bit low in the mix, which is a shame because it would have rounded out the bottom end to a massive sound.
There are some really interesting riffs and structures sporadically appearing No Beast So Fierce - Various - Alpha Motherfuckers - A Tribute To Turbonegro the album.
A great album that fellow grindheads Oostmalle Airport (A.P Variations) - Various - Uncharted Places do well to add to their collection. Discuss this review on the Thrash Board tell a friend about this review.
