Yet the initial stages of the war pitted the radical Ultraquists against Calvinist Reformed forces. The Elector of Saxony, a Lutheran whose prime minister was a Catholic, could remain cautiously on the fence.

The volume was further dedicated to the Elector's Catholic minister, Prince Eggenberg. The composer mined his motet texts from a variety Dein Kleiner Bruder - Various - Komm Mit Mir In Die Milchbar Biblical and Patristic lodes.

His primary source may have been a prayerbook edited by Frankfurt theology professor Andreas Musculus. The texts heavily lean on the Psalms and writings of St. Augustine, but include other passages from the Gospels, the Song of Songs, and St. The overall tone is one of passionate and mystic piety. Augustine's meditation on Christ's Passion at the heart.

The mystic invocation of the name of Christ attributed to St. Bernard begins the volume O bone, o dulcisand a larger cycle of five motets on texts from St. Augustine's "Meditations" is featured early Quid commisisti, o dulcissime puer. A penitential Psalm setting Psalm 6, Domine, ne in furore tuo concludes the "meat" of this collection, followed by a series of thanksgivings at the table.

The composer further links many adjacent motets by tonal relationships. His compositional style in the Cantiones Sacrae spans the gamut from homophony and "classical" imitative polyphony to the affective motivic figures and parlando declamation of the new monodic styles.

Often wrenching chromaticism vivifies his mystical texts. Throughout, the motet collection demonstrates the Libera Me - Various - A Treasury Of Gregorian Chants of a very mature composer, and a keen mind for large-scale musical and thematic structure, Deus Misereatur Nostri - Heinrich Schütz - Weser-Renaissance / Manfred Cordes - Cantiones Sacrae for the merciful salvation of the One God amid earthly tribulation and war.

The Weser-Renaissance ensemble, led by Manfred Cordes, has disappointed me on earlier choral CDs. Hence I was reluctant to buy this ten-year-old performance with its rather murky-looking cover art. But my reluctance was misplaced; this is not a choral performance. It's a one-on-a-part rendition by technically superb singers of the highest rank/5(2).

Thus, Heinrich Schütz, chapelmaster for the Elector in Dresden, could also attempt to remain politically neutral. Schütz 's collection of 40 motets published in under the title Cantiones Sacrae reflects this tenuous yet spirited religious milieu.
